Member-only story

“My New Life” tells my story of a new start in life for me beginning soon after successfully recovering from schizophrenia, bicycling across Canada, and then continuing my mental health advocacy work in developing countries at www.MindAid.ca.

I contacted a nearby community and told the town office that my home community is putting on a “mental health town hall” soon. I will keep phoning more nearby communities and telling them we’re doing this.

Maybe, just maybe, if more communities in my province start doing these, word will get out about them and other provinces will take note and follow suit.

A mental health town hall would get everyone in a community (citizens, mental health workers, indigenous, churches, schools, employers, nonprofits, etc.) in one room and start brainstorming ways to improve mental health in their own neighbourhood.

Town halls are nothing new, but for all I know the mental health town hall my hometown is planning could be the first one in the world ever.

Would you want to put on a mental health town hall in your own community? Phone your town office and ask them if it’s something that they would like to pursue.

I looked up growing perennial vegetables and starting a small-scale vegetable garden/farm. Sometimes it’s nice to go off on tangents. My main focus is mental health, but I am trying to do my best to help the environment and have a small footprint (even though I wear size 13 shoes).
