Member-only story

“My New Life” tells my story of a new start in life for me beginning soon after successfully recovering from schizophrenia, bicycling across Canada, and then continuing my mental health advocacy work in developing countries at www.MindAid.ca.

This morning I went to the outdoor gym in my hometown. I took my yoga mat and did some pushups, pullups, sit-ups, squats, and dipsy-doodles (okay, they’re called dips, but I thought I’d liven it up a bit).

Then I went to a small hill and did 10 minutes of hill sprints. I love doing hill sprints! I love running at maximum speed where I can’t move my arms and legs any faster. I find it very grounding.

I have severe wanderlust. After working out, I watched a YouTube video of someone’s car dashcam as they drove around the Ring Road, which encircles the country of Iceland, one of the top places I’d like to visit in the world.

I would love to visit Iceland and see scenery like this, as Darth Vader said in his last scene in Star Wars, “with my own eyes”. It is one of my top destinations on our planet.

Later in the morning I went to the local Remembrance Day ceremonies. Afterwards I volunteered to serve food in the kitchen to some of the participants.

I got distracted and ending being 20 minutes late for a meeting with my videographer friend who is making the film about my mental health bicycle ride across Canada this summer.

I make most of my appointments, but forget the odd one. Today was one of those days.
